Parsha Shoftim

Parsha Shoftim שופטים “Judges”

  • Torah portion: Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9
  • Haphtarah: Isaiah 51:12-52:12
  • Brit Chadasha: Matthew 3:1-17

Did you know: Shoftim is the 5th parsha [portion] of sefer [scroll of/book of] Devarim [Deuteronomy]?

Science/Technology: Our portion this week includes the instruction to measure out cities of refuge. We will watch a 5-minute video about surveying and study the career of land surveying and the scientific skills needed to do that job.

Art: This week God tells us not to destroy the trees while warring with another nation. This week we will do a painting project called trees in the four seasons.

History/Government: This week’s parsha focuses a lot on God’s legal system. We will be studying the American judicial system and participating in a mock trial. We will learn about the intricacies of the court system. We will read through the action alerts that HSLDA has posted for our state. We will write a letter to our senator regarding an alert of our choosing.

Bible: Deuteronomy 17:18 tells us that kings are to write a copy of the Torah for themselves. This week we will start a notebook of our favorite Bible verses. We will use our best handwriting and also complete a brief study of calligraphy. Each day, we will choose a verse or two to copy into our notebooks. We will pick from any place in the scriptures. If we need to learn about any particular topic, we will find verses relevant to that topic (such as sickness, anger, thankfulness, etc.) to copy down.
