Parsha Vayishlach

Parsha Vayishlach וישלח “He sent”

  • Torah portion: B’reisheet 32:3-36:43
  • Haphtarah: Obadiah 1:1-21
  • Brit Chadasha: Hebrews 11:11-20

Did you know: Vayishlach is the 8th parsha [portion] of sefer [scroll of/book of] B’reisheet [Genesis]?

Bible: This week we will continue our Torah study by completing this week’s Messianic Weekly Series of parsha studies. The preschoolers will complete Parsha for Preschool for this week’s parsha. You can find these affordable and wonderful resources in our storefront. We will also continue working through our parsha lapbook MessiShul program with the older elementary kids and junior high school students. This fulfills a portion of our Hebrew language study as well. We have a student preparing for a Bat Mitzvah in our homeschool so she will continue learning through her Bar/Bat Mitzvah workbook as well.

Teen Time: Have you checked out Liv’s Teen Devos lately? We will listen to Pastor Joel of Messianic Family Fellowship teach on this week’s parsha via his free Messianic podcasts.

Math: Just in time for reviewing our basic math facts, Restoring the Way has a NEW math drill sheet workbook collection. Noach’s Math will help us review addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication facts, and division facts. These drill sheets are an invaluable tool for increasing speed and accuracy in math calculations. You can find these Noach’s Math in our storefront.

Reading/Phonics: We will be using MessiKids Reading for the younger elementary students to continue our reading practice and Super MessiKids Preschool Adventure program for the preschool students to continue our studies in reading, phonics, spelling, and handwriting.

Hebrew: To polish up our Hebrew skills, we will continue using the Hebrew readers and handwriting sheets available from Restoring the Way.

Science: This week we read about how Jacob and Esau make up. There is a health benefit to forgiveness. The Bible says that bitterness dries the bones (Proverbs 14:30) and might contribute to osteoporosis or arthritis. Unforgiveness affects your relationships too. This article from Natural News summarizes nicely how unforgiveness affects your cardiovascular system as well.

Health: In Genesis 35:1-8 the reading reiterates how Jacob had to flee his brother. Part of what we commit to do each year here in New York State for our homeschooling is to teach our children about safety. This week we will review our emergency escape plan in case of a fire or other disaster. We will map out a drawing of our house complete with a few different methods of escape. We will discuss different scenarios. We will check and replace the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. We will have our fire extinguisher inspected as well.

Physical Education: Genesis 32:22-32 tells us about Jacob wrestling with God. Now, without getting too rowdy, we are going to practice the basics of self-defense. This video we selected is specific to kids. This next video includes some Krav Maga (Israeli martial arts) instruction. It is a LOT rougher than the first video so I think we’ll just watch it and not practice it. My older sons have a punching bag in the barn and some MMA experience so they will like to watch this video.

Parsha Vayetze

Science: The science behind Jacob being able to breed colored, striped, or spotted sheep from white ones is fascinating. This article (a PDF will open from the link) has some interesting and easy to understand DNA information and also a little bit about prenatal nutrition affecting gene expression. At the end of the article there are many works cited that can be searched for online and read for further study.

History: The article here adds some interesting insight into Laban’s teraphim (gods) and how the Code of Hammurabi might have been the “law” that Laban was subject to at the time.

Art: This parsha study would not be complete without using some spotted yarn to create something awesome! So, we are going to utilize “arm knitting” to make a blanket. I know it sounds difficult but it is FAST and EASY (my two favorite qualities in an art project). Here is the tutorial.

Hebrew: To polish up our Hebrew skills, we will continue using the Hebrew readers and handwriting sheets available from Restoring the Way.

History/Geography: We will learn about the Cave of Machpelah where Sarah was buried, (as well as all of the patriarchs/matriarchs except Rachel). This website has a very good overview of the geography. In Jewish culture, this location is a place where children growing in responsibility in their spiritual walks are awarded their first siddurs (prayer books) which are used for the three prayer times through the day. Restoring the Way has a children’s Messianic simplified and paraphrased siddur to get us started in our Amidah (standing) prayers. We can watch a video on YouTube with Yehudah Glick about the cave of Machpelah.

Science/Technology: Since we are learning this week about Rebekah drawing water from a well, we are going to study wells. There are many different types of wells. We are also going to learn about water treatment and how to purify water if the water is contaminated.

Art: Abraham’s servant gave Rebekah silver and gold and jewelry and garments. This week we are going to make upcycled leather cuff bracelets. So, grab an old purse or belt or leather jacket from the thrift store to use as the starting point for your project. We might also make earrings. HERE is the link for the upcycled belt bracelet/cuff and HERE is the link for the leather feather-look earrings.

History/Geography: We will study the historical account about Lot’s wife turning into a pillar (or memorial) of salt. We will use this website as the starting point of our study.

Science/Technology: We can incorporate a bit of science into the history/geography portion of our weekly study as we examine the saltiness of the waters of the Dead Sea surrounding the area of (the suspected location of) Sodom and Gomorrah. We will discuss evaporation and salt deposits using the experiment described here.

Art: This week we will paint with watercolor and salt. The end result is a very cool picture. This website has the best tutorial.

Science/Technology: In Genesis chapter 13, we read that Abram and Lot have to separate because the land cannot sustain both sets of herds. This week we will study sustainable animal husbandry. We will learn the benefits to the animals, land, environment, and humans of grass-fed and pastured flocks. Lots of great resources are talked about and linked in this website which we will use for the basis of our study.

History/Geography: We will study the Biblical history and geography of Sodom and Gomorrah using this website.

Art: Isaac means “laughter.” What does your name mean? In this week’s parsha YHWH changes Abram’s name and Sarai’s name. What things make you unique? This week we will complete this really neat art project that shows our uniqueness and the beauty of how we were created and who we are growing to become. To help the younger ones keep the fingerprint shape more accurate, consider tracing the fingerprint image here lightly on their drawing paper as a guide to help them.
